One of my proudest on-the-street moments was being the first person to create radio commercials for a then new company called “Chipotle”. At the time (1999), no one could pronounce the name. My how times have changed. It was a fun experience and here is one of the spots I created. Thank you, Dan and Steve!

On my birthday back in 1969, the first men walked on the moon. Since then, I’ve been fascinated with space. So imagine my thrill when I was asked to go on camera in some videos for KSC. It’s been a few years, and my hairline has certainly changed, but this is still my proudest “Gary-on-the-street” experience.

“PIAS” is a store franchise that sells new and gently used sporting goods. What’s not to like about that? Working with a client from my days doing Media Play TV, I was able to talk to people about sporting good while playing with the gear and having a good time. It was a great gig!

Even when you talk to real people and use their real comments, many folks still assume the dialogue in “real people” spots is all canned. Sometimes it is. But NOT when I do it. Still, when you listen to “Capusta” (that’s what he said his name was), I completely understand why some might be skeptical that he’s for real. But he is!

Here’s the assignment: Go to the Mall of America. Have people touch a new facial tissue. Get their immediate and candid response. And no, you can’t tell them what it is or where they can get it (because, at that time, they couldn’t get it). It’s not for the faint of heart. Or the short of BS. I guess that’s why I excel at it.

We were in a Media Play store in Pittsburgh and my cameraman saw a giant said and said, “I wonder if he plays football?” I smirked, “Just because we’re in Pittsburgh doesn’t mean every big guy plays pro football.” Sure enough, Tony was right. He was an offensive lineman for the Steelers. And he was a lot of fun.
