Comcast Bad Boyfriend Radio (1:00)
Comcast-Bad Boyfriend
This is the radio version of TV spot we created for Comcast. The boyfriend was played by “some dude from Qwest” since he asked for $200 just to go away. This was our direct response to the long term contracts the competition was asking customers to fork out. It was a scenario that our audience could relate to.
Super Target Bad ApplesRadio (1:00)
Target “Bad Apples”
This was one of the first spots created for what was then a new concept: Super Target—the Target with a grocery store in it. A group of women banter about one woman’s claim that she’s “through with bad apples”. The dialogue leads you down one path, and then all of a sudden… On radio, it was an attention-getting spot.
HealthPartners ClinicsEaracheRadio (1:00)
HealthPartners Clinics “Earache”
Every parent’s been through it—an inconsolable child with something that could be nothing. So, does it warrant a doctor’s attention? Or will they sleep it off? No one wants to wait too long. With the HealthPartners Clinics, we learn, you can “Know Now”. A sweet , warm spot with a little humor.
ChipotleSean Penn, the HogRadio (1:00)
Chipotle “Sean Penn, the Hog”
I feel very fortunate and proud to have done the first man-on-the-street spots for Chipotle…back in the day before there was one on every corner. I learned quickly that people who like Chipotle could be very zealous fans…and have terrific imaginations. This was one of over a dozen spots I recorded for Chipotle.
ProexProcrastinator’s AnonymousRadio (1:00)
Proex “Procrastinator’s Anonymous”
Proex was my first client in 1991. And despite a changing marketplace (my first spots were about film developing!) and four different corporate owners, I’m still creating Proex radio, 19 years later. This spot was a favorite of mine—about how quickly they could create holiday cards. Excellent actors made it sing.
Jiffy Lube Edward HedgeclipperhandsRadio (1:00)
Jiffy Lube “Edward Hedgeclipperhands”
The premise: A free movie rental with every oil change. Hmmm…that’s different. So I created “A Jiffy Look at the Movies”, where I took popular movies and showed supposed scenes from each film. Oddly enough, they all revolved around changing your oil. Not easy when you have hedge clipper hands. Oopsie!
ABC Wine & SpiritsSkunky BeerRadio (1:00)
ABC “Skunky Beer”
Using a sound effects quiz, we educated listeners (in an entertaining way) about why wine, just like beer, needs to be protected from overly hot conditions—so it doesn’t get “skunky”. Showing ABC as the wine expert helped elevate their credibility. And doing it with SFX and crisp dialogue kept listeners engaged.
Rainbow FoodsThe Johnson SistersRadio (1:00)
Rainbow Foods “The Swinging Johnson Sisters”
We did a year-long jingle contest with Rainbow. There was a new winner each week. It was great fun to create and listen to on the radio. (I would love to do another one some day.) The Johnson Sisters were three sisters who entered on a whim and ended up being named our #1 fave. (Long before American Idol.)
G-Will LiquorsBeer ShampooRadio (1:00)
G-Will Liquors “Beer Shampoo”
My client told me of a surprise phone call he received some years ago when this spot was on the air. The caller said he was Al Franken. Yes, THEE Al Franken. And he just wanted to say he liked this commercial. I have no reason to doubt this story, but I would love it if Al himself could confirm it.
Stein MartYellingRadio (1:00)
Stein Mart “Yelling”
For my money, there is always way too much “excitement” in advertising. Everything is the biggest sale ever. HURRY! Best prices ever! Hyperbole abounds. So it was nice to create a much calmer option to sell this retailer. A great read by voice talent Mike Dodge make for a compelling, not overwrought spot.
ProexMissing PersonRadio (1:00)
Proex “Missing Person”
Of the dozens of spots I created for Proex over the years, this remains one of their all-time favorites. It came out when people were first making the transition to digital cameras and it highlights the continued value and importance of printing images on paper. It also has some features a cute and funny little girl.
